Surah An-Nasr English Translation with Tafseer
Surah An-Nasr was revealed in Madinah, near the end of Prophet Muhammad’s (صلى الله عليه وسلم) life. It is known as the Surah of Farewell because it signaled the completion of the Prophet’s mission.
Verse 1: إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ
“When the help of Allah and the victory comes,”
Tafseer:
This verse refers to the divine help and the conquest of Makkah (Fath Makkah), which marked the turning point for Islam. It was not just a military victory but a spiritual triumph that came through Allah’s support. The verse reminds us that all success comes by the will and help of Allah alone, not just through human effort.
Verse 2: وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا
“And you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes,”
Tafseer:
After the conquest of Makkah, tribes and individuals began accepting Islam in large numbers across Arabia. This mass conversion was a sign that the message of Islam had reached maturity. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) witnessed the fulfillment of his mission, as hearts were opened to the truth of Islam without force or pressure.
Verse 3: فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا
“Then glorify the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance.”
Tafseer:
In this final verse, Allah instructs the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) — and by extension, all Muslims — to praise and thank Allah (tasbeeh and hamd) and seek forgiveness (istighfar). Even after a great victory, humility and turning to Allah are essential. It is also seen as a gentle indication of the Prophet’s ﷺ mission nearing completion, and that his time in this world was coming to an end.

Aisha (رضي الله عنها) reported that after this surah, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) often recited “Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk” (Glory and praise be to You, O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You).
